Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 all employers have a duty to provide health and safety training for their employees. Who decides whether or not training is required? Is simply showing the equipment to someone “training”? Who decides on the extent of training required.

Regulation 3 of The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 tells us that employers must make an assessment of any risks to health and safety to which his employees may be exposed when using work equipment.

Regulation 9(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1998 tells us that if any such risks are present then adequate training must be provided to make employees aware of the risks, and then trained in the methods to be adopted when using the work equipment to eliminate those risks.

Regulation 9(2) of The Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1998 states that training is not just the user of the work equipment but also for anyone who manages or supervises any of their employees who use the equipment.
